    Before making any decisions or just hiring the first person you phoned, the first step is to understand the differences between the two and how an accountant or bookkeeper can help your business.

    The first thing is that a lot of people think that bookkeeping and accountant are the same. That is not so both professions work towards the same goals however their daily tasks can be very different.

    What do bookkeepers do?

    Bookkeepers process a business transactions which can include; completing payroll, recording financial transactions, producing invoices, maintaining and balancing subsidiaries, general ledgers and historical accounts, as well as posting debits and credits. They can help to ensure that IRD filings are completed in a timely manner.

    Business owners who are just starting out may opt for a bookkeeper over an accountant as they can provide the finance knowledge that a business owner may lack or complete tasks the owners don’t have time for. Some bookkeepers will come into the office which can help to train an owner on what they need to do later on and others can complete the task virtually depending on the software you are using.

    A bookkeeper can be useful to keep your records up to date and compliant ready to be handed over to your accountant at the end of financial year to complete your tax filing.

    Accountants normally have more training – requiring an accounting degree and chartered accounting firms also require or train their staff towards a chartered accounting degree which necessitates a certain amount of extra training each year to remain qualified.

    Small businesses tend to hire an accountant to complete their end of year financials and consider enlisting more of their services once they start employing staff or require more specialised reporting.

    What is testosterone?

    Secreted by the testes, testosterone is the sex hormone responsible for male sexual characteristics such as big muscles, deep voices, and hairy chests. It’s a chemical messenger that plays a key role in various processes throughout the body, including sperm production and bone density.

    (In women, who also need testosterone to keep various processes humming, testosterone is secreted by the ovaries and adrenal glands. Their bodies just make much less of it; about 10 to 20 times less than men.)

    Low testosterone vs. lower testosterone

    Testosterone levels naturally ebb with age, with most men losing about 1 to 2 percent annually starting around age 40. By age 75, most men have 30 percent less of the hormone than they did at age 25.2

    (Fun fact: Between ages 25 and 80, men can expect their testicles to shrink 15 percent.3)

    However, age-related drops in testosterone are not the same thing as “low testosterone.”

    Hypogonadism is the medical term for low testosterone levels, and it affects about 35 percent of men older than 45 and 30 to 50 percent of men who have obesity or type 2 diabetes, according to the Endocrine Society, one of the professional public health organizations that sets hypogonadism treatment guidelines.

    Not only can overly low testosterone make you feel fatigued and do a serious number on your sex drive, but it can also harm your bone and cardiovascular health, says Dr. Asafu-Adjei.

    “You need testosterone for good bone strength,” says Dr. Asafu-Adjei. “As you get older, you’re already dealing with weaker bones, so having lowered testosterone isn’t going to help.”

    Alternatively, bringing levels up to normal seems to offer cardiovascular benefits, she says. (The big caveat here is up to normal—not far above it.)

    The importance of referring out

    What if you or your client have most of the hallmark symptoms of hypogonadism but still have blood levels of testosterone in the normal range?

    “Many men over 30 who feel down or low energy will now automatically blame their testosterone,” says Dr. Asafu-Adjei. “Their symptoms might be related to testosterone, but they also could be related to not sleeping, stress, or some other factor.”

    That’s why seeing a healthcare professional specializing in men’s health and testosterone management is so important.

    Such a physician can screen you or your client for dozens of other problems (like stress and poor sleep) and conditions (like diabetes, obesity, or sleep apnea) that either mimic the symptoms of hypogonadism or interfere with the production or signaling of testosterone.

    In other words, supplemental testosterone is the answer for some men with symptoms of hypogonadism, but not all of them. An extensive workup is required.

    “There are overlapping symptoms with low testosterone as well as a lot of nuances around hormone treatment,” says Dr. Asafu-Adjei.

    “For example, outside of your total testosterone, we also look at your testosterone-to-estrogen ratio and other related hormones. That’s why it’s so important to go to someone who knows what they’re doing. They’ll take a deeper dive to figure out the root of the problem.”

    So, if you specialize in coaching middle-aged and older men, get a urologist or endocrinologist in your referral network.

    Testosterone and aggression

    Many people assume that, in high amounts, testosterone turns men into pushy, road-rage-fueled jerks. However, the association between the hormone and behavior is much more complex.4

    As it turns out, both too much and too little testosterone can lead to irritability.

    In addition, the link between testosterone and aggression depends a lot on someone’s personality, upbringing, context, social norms, and more.

    For example, in one experiment, researchers asked forty young men to play a video game that involved accepting and rejecting offers from a proposer. If someone deemed the proposal too low, they could reject the offer and punish the person for making such a substandard ask. Alternatively, if they considered the offer beneficial, they could accept it as well as reward the person.5

    Researchers injected some of the men with testosterone as they played the game.

    As expected, players treated with the hormone were more likely to punish proposers, especially if they considered the offer unfair. However, if they perceived the offer as fair, they rewarded the proposer more generously.

    The increased testosterone amplified aggression, but also generosity.

    Some researchers refer to this phenomenon as “the male warrior hypothesis,” which holds that testosterone may function to help some men protect and cooperate with their “in group” (such as their family, friends, and coworkers) while simultaneously punishing anyone seen as an outsider.6

    7 evidence-based ways to optimize testosterone… naturally

    On the Internet, if you look for ways to boost testosterone through lifestyle, you’ll quickly become inundated with supplement recommendations and lists of T-boosting and T-harming foods.

    However, research-supported ways to optimize testosterone generally center on the fundamental dietary and lifestyle measures you’ve long heard are good for you.

    They include the following:

    Testosterone optimizer #1: Make sure you’re eating enough.

    Your body prioritizes thinking (your brain) and movement (your muscles) above sex (your reproductive organs).

    Think about it this way: If there was a famine, the last thing you’d need is another mouth to feed.

    So, when you chronically burn more calories than you consume, hormone levels generally drop. (This is true in both men and women.)

    “A lot of men in their 20s and 30s come to me about their low testosterone levels and their low testosterone symptoms,” says Dr. Berardi. “These are mostly guys who prioritize exercise. They work out a lot and watch what they eat. In other words, they are men experiencing mid- to long-term negative energy balance.”

    Dr. Berardi’s advice is often not what men expect.

    If their eating and exercise routines suggest they’re in a chronic negative energy situation, he simply recommends they eat an extra healthy snack or two a day.

    “In situations like this, adding a couple hundred extra calories of high-quality protein and carbohydrate often fixes everything,” he says.

    Those added calories could come from a couple scoops of whey protein mixed in milk with a nut butter and banana sandwich on the side, he says.

    Another favorite snack of Dr. Berardi’s: A bowl of steel-cut oats with protein powder, cacao powder, dates, raw nuts, and nut butter.

    Testosterone optimizer #2: Prioritize sleep.

    Testosterone production has its own circadian rhythm: It’s higher in the morning and lower at the end of the day.

    As you sleep, levels rise again, peaking during your first segment of rapid eye movement. This may explain why various sleep disorders—including sleep apnea—are associated with testosterone deficiency.7

    A handful of small studies have looked at what happens to hormone levels when men skimp on sleep.8 In one of these studies, participants slept just five hours a night for eight days, resulting in a 10 to 15 percent drop in daytime testosterone levels. 9

    The right amount of sleep varies from one person to another. However, if you routinely get fewer than seven hours and wake feeling exhausted, it’s a good bet you’re not getting enough. If you wake unrefreshed or struggle to sleep soundly, our 14-day sleep plan can help.

    Testosterone optimizer #3: Maintain healthy body fat levels.

    Body fat secretes aromatase, an enzyme that can convert some testosterone into estrogen.

    According to some research, men categorized as overweight or obese tend to have slightly higher levels of estrogen, as well as the stress hormone cortisol. 10 11

    More research is needed to know whether these slightly higher estrogen levels are enough to contribute to hypogonadism.

    In the meantime, however, a healthy body composition is vital for overall good health and may also help to optimize testosterone.

    Testosterone optimizer #4: Get moving.

    Regular exercise is associated with elevations in testosterone. It can also help you sleep more restfully and keep body fat in check.

    Resistance training offers more of a testosterone boost than endurance exercise. (Two to three sessions a week is a great benchmark.)

    However, endurance exercise can also help, providing you exercise at the right intensity, finds research. (That’s 30 minutes of rigorous activity, four to five times a week.12)

    Overtraining without enough recovery can lead to the opposite effect though, potentially causing gains to plateau and suppressing testosterone.13

    Testosterone optimizer #5: Consume a well-rounded, healthy diet.

    In addition to helping you avoid nutrient deficiencies that can drive down testosterone levels, a healthy diet protects your blood vessels.

    That’s crucial for getting erections.

    A study of 21,469 men found that those who consumed foods consistent with the Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of developing erectile dysfunction over ten years compared to men who didn’t follow the diet.14

    “Mediterranean diets are also known to promote heart health,” says Dr. Asafu-Adjei.

    The Mediterranean diet emphasizes fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes, and healthy fats from foods like olive oil, eggs, and fatty fish. It de-emphasizes red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and sodium.

    However, eating patterns that center on minimally processed whole foods likely offer the same benefits.

    Many fruits, veggies, and other minimally processed whole foods are rich sources of flavonoids, a plant chemical that helps to improve blood flow and testosterone production.

    Testosterone optimizer #6: Avoid chronic emotional stress.

    When you’re under stress, your body produces cortisol and other hormones that prepare you to fight, flee, or freeze. As these stress hormones flood your body, they suppress the production of reproductive hormones like testosterone.15

    This high-cortisol, low-testosterone phenomenon is a likely consequence of millions of years of evolution.

    Early humans who were more interested in mating than fleeing from sharp-clawed wild animals didn’t usually live long enough to pass their genes to the next generation.

    However, not all short-term stressors dampen testosterone. Some can raise it temporarily, including exam stress or exercise.16

    So, aim for the stress sweet spot where you feel energized and engaged with life but not so busy and harried that you have no time to relax, sleep, or enjoy life.

    Testosterone optimizer #7: Prevent zinc deficiency.

    As a certified health coach, it’s out of your scope of practice to recommend supplements to treat a condition like hypogonadism.

    In addition, the boost someone might get from a supplement pales in comparison to the six pieces of advice above, or to testosterone therapy.

    With that important caveat out of the way…

    There is a correlation between low zinc intake and low testosterone levels.17 18

    However, to benefit from supplementation, someone must truly be deficient in the mineral. Simply topping off someone’s already adequate zinc stores likely won’t lead to a testosterone boost, and may even cause harm.

    Checking for and treating a mineral deficiency requires the expertise of someone trained in medical nutrition therapy. If you lack this training, encourage clients with low testosterone to talk to their healthcare professionals about whether a zinc supplement might help.

    Use the Deep Health lens

    Let’s circle back to Dr. Berardi’s hypothesis, first mentioned at the beginning of this story:

    Some evolutionary biologists have indeed theorized that men evolved to have higher testosterone levels when they’re younger (to encourage mating) and lower levels when they’re older (to encourage parenting).19

    However, this is more of a theory than a certainty.

    What we can say with certainty is this: There’s no one-size-fits-all protocol for healthy testosterone levels.

    When testosterone drops after middle age, some men feel lousy.

    Even when they do everything right in the lifestyle department—exercising, eating a healthy diet, sleeping enough, and so on—they’re unable to raise testosterone into the normal range. For these men, a healthcare professional, thorough evaluation, and, if warranted, testosterone therapy can be life-changing.

    At the same time, plenty of other men continue to thrive well into (and past!) middle age.

    Sure, they may be unable to pack on muscle like they used to. But, if they’re paying attention, suggests Dr. Berardi, they might notice other pluses. Maybe they’re more patient, nurturing, and empathetic, for example.

    “Don’t get me wrong. I’d be very unhappy with an inappropriate or clinically significant lowering of my hormone levels,” says Dr. Berardi. “However, if I can stay in the normal range and symptom-free with good lifestyle practices, I don’t think I have too much to worry about.”

    Dr. Berardi recently turned 50.

    “I’m at this stage where I see an interesting fork in the road,” he said.

    “Will I gracefully accept aging and see this as a new season—or will I fight against it? I could color my hair, do hair transplants, top up my T levels, and get Botox injections. Or I could accept that there will be some eventual decline and ask, ‘What am I getting in return?’”

    Instant NBA Draft 2025 grades for every pick, starting with Cooper Flagg to the Mavs


    The 2025 NBA Draft class has been endlessly debated over the last 12 months, with little consensus among the lottery prospects after Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper come off the board with the first two picks. Finally, draft day is here, and the speculation about how certain players fit with certain teams will be over.

    There’s no drama at the top of the draft. Flagg will be the new franchise player for the Dallas Mavericks just months after they traded their last franchise player, Luka Doncic, to the Los Angeles Lakers. Dylan Harper will join Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio for what the Spurs hope will be a championship duo. Then things get interesting. The Philadelphia 76ers hold the keys to the draft at No. 3 overall, and things only tougher to project after that.

Scope out the three highly-touted prospects I’m fading in this class, and three sleepers I’m willing to bet on.     1. Dallas Mavericks – Cooper Flagg, F, Duke

    Grade: A+

    Flagg is one of the strongest prospects I’ve evaluated since I started covering the draft here in 2014. He checks every box for a potential franchise player: he had elite production at a young age, he has a great frame for an NBA forward, the skills to dominate on or off-the-ball, and the athleticism to finish plays on both ends of the floor. Flagg’s elite mentality ties the whole package together: it feels like he plays harder than anyone else on the court despite always being the most talented player out there. He was arguably the best player in college basketball this past season despite being 17 years old for half the season after only three years of high school. He’s about to be the youngest player in the NBA, but he’s still going to be an instant contributor around Anthony Davis in Dallas. The Mavs winning the lottery completely makes up for their awful Luka Doncic trade. Good thing Flagg plays defense, so even Nico Harrison won’t trade him.

    2. San Antonio Spurs – Dylan Harper, G, Rutgers

    Grade: A

    Harper is a huge guard at 6’6 with a 6’10 wingspan who gets downhill with ease and converted a stunning 70 percent of his rim attempts as a freshman at Rutgers. He’s more of a scorer than a facilitator at this stage, but he still has solid playmaking vision and has shown some passing manipulation flashes. Harper should be able to guard multiple positions, and he’s especially solid on the ball. His ability to collapse the defenses off the bounce is going to make Victor Wembanyama’s life so much easier. He’s not the best shooter yet, which makes his fit next to Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox a bit less enticing. Still, Harper hit 37 percent of his spot-up threes and should be a fine player off the ball. Every team in the league wants big guards who can get into the paint, and the Spurs just landed one next to Wemby.

    3. Philadelphia 76ers – VJ Edgecombe, G, Baylor

    Grade: B+

    Edgecombe is a freak athlete who leverages his physical gifts to disrupt opposing offenses and get out in the open floor. He’s a solid spot-up shooter with easy three-point range, he’s a fantastic rebounder for a guard, and he generally does a good job avoiding turnovers. Edgecombe has a high floor because he’s a good defender with plenty of offensive utility. His ceiling will be determined by how his finishing and pull-up three-point shot develops. He’s an interesting fit for a Sixers team that already has two smaller guards to build around in Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxey, but Edgecombe has a case as the best player on the board, and that makes him a perfectly fine selection.

    4. Charlotte Hornets – Kon Knueppel, G, Duke

    Grade: A

    Knueppel is an elite shooter who made better than 40 percent of his threes and 91 percent of his threes as the Robin to Cooper Flagg’s Batman at Duke. He’s a solid secondary playmaker who developed a nice connection in the pick-and-roll with another Duke lottery pick, Khaman Maluach, while also showing some ability to score on drives off two feet in the paint. Knueppel doesn’t look like a top-5 pick at first blush with only an average mix of length and explosiveness, but his strength, footwork, and knockdown shooting will make him a very good pro for a long time. I like his fit between LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller as a connective piece who can play within a team structure and still figure out how to pick his spots and have a big impact.

    5. Utah Jazz – Ace Bailey, F, Rutgers

    Grade: B

    Bailey has an awesome combination of length, shot-making, and athletic explosiveness. He can splash shots from all over the floor, but tends to settle for difficult pull-ups because he doesn’t have the ball handling to get all the way to the rim. Bailey can struggle with his focus defensively, but he has the tools to recover to the ball and swat shots. I worry about his lack of passing vision if he’s going to step into a starring role on a Jazz roster that’s far away from competing. Still, Bailey should have a high floor with his physical gifts and shooting, and as the game slows down for him, he could easily end up as one of the better players in this class.

    6. Washington Wizards – Tre Johnson, G, Texas

    Grade: B+

    Johnson is an indefatigable shooter with a quick release and immense confidence that every shot is going in. The Texas freshman has a unique talent for bending defenses off the ball with his movement shooting, and he’s a an excellent pull-up shooter and mid-range shooter, too. Johnson’s intense mentality should be a welcome addition to a young and wayward Wizards team, and I think he’s better as a defender and passer than he’s given credit for, but he still has plenty of room to grow in those areas. Johnson needs to add strength to his thin frame and prove he can do more than settle for jump shots, but his shooting is so good that it’s hard to imagine him failing.

    7. New Orleans Pelicans – Jeremiah Fears, G, Oklahoma

    Grade: B+

    Fears only spent three years in high school before being thrown into the SEC fire and still leading Oklahoma to the NCAA tournament. He has the best combination of speed and ball handling in this class, and he doesn’t need a screen to beat his defender and get into the teeth of the defense. He has a very good mid-range/floater game for such a young player, and has already mastered the dark arts of getting fouled. Fears has only average size for an NBA lead guard, and he isn’t a good three-point shooter or rim finisher yet. Still, Fears thrived at a super young age against ultra difficult competition, and his best plays showed star upside. The Pelicans are swinging for the fences here.

    8. Brooklyn Nets – Egor Demin, G, BYU

    Grade: D

    I named Demin as one of three prospects I’m fading in this draft. He absolutely has the talent to prove me wrong. The BYU freshman has a great combination of size (6’9) and passing, and looked like a top-5 pick at times this year against weak competition. The problem is that Demin’s production suffered against better competition when facing bigger and more athletic players. He lacks burst to beat anyone off the dribble as a ball handler, he’s a poor three-point shooter, and he’s too weak to compete defensively right now. Demin will have to improve his shot quite a bit to live up to this draft spot, but his size and passing gives him a chance.

    9. Toronto Raptors – Collin Murray-Boyles, F, South Carolina

    Grade: A

    Murray-Boyles is the best defensive player in this draft. He also has plenty of offensive skills with impressive driving ability and great passing vision. He can overpower opposing players with his strength, and he can challenge shots and muck up the passing lanes with his length. The catch? Murray-Boyles is a bit short for a big man at 6’6.5 barefoot, and he isn’t a good shooter yet. Read my feature on how CMB is attacking his shooting development, and how he went from a three-star recruit to a top-10 pick. He’s one of the best all-around players in the draft, and he’s going to be a gem for a Toronto team … as long as they can put some more shooting around him for a roster that already doesn’t have much shooting.

    10. Phoenix Suns – Khaman Maluach, C, Duke

    Grade: A

    Maluach was the No. 3 player on my board. I love his combination of length, finishing, and paint protection which gives him a high floor to impact the game. Maluach’s ceiling is dependent on how his three-point shooting and perimeter defense develops, and I’m willing to bet on him in both areas. The fact that he’s only been playing basketball for five years and is already this good is pretty amazing. The Suns badly needed a center, and Maluach falling to this spot is an incredible gift. He has the high upside Phoenix needs to salvage the Devin Booker era. This is my favorite pick of the draft.

    11. Memphis Grizzlies – Cedric Coward, F, Washington State

    Grade: B-

    Coward only played six games at Washington State this past season after starting his career in D3 and also spending two years at Washington State. His year ended early because of a torn labrum, but his defense and shooting projection was still encouraging enough to put Duke and Alabama in a bidding war for him in the transfer portal. Coward shot up the draft board at the combine, and is now a lottery pick. The Blazers traded this pick to the Grizzlies. I’m a bit skeptical of Coward just because he has played so few games against good competition, and hasn’t played well in those games. He’s the mystery man of this draft, but his ridiculous 7’2 wingspan and 40 percent three-point stroke is still a decent bet at this part of the draft.

    12. Chicago Bulls – Noa Essengue, F, Ulm

    Grade: A-

    Essengue has a ridiculous combination of length and athleticism, and he’s already been productive in a pro league as the second youngest prospect in this class. He’s at his best in transition, and the Bulls are a great fit for his skill set as a team that wants to play at a super fast tempo. Essengue is not yet a good shooter, handler, or passer, so the Bulls will need to develop his skill level. Still, it’s hard to find a big forward with this kind of mobility who has already put up good numbers against older competition. The Bulls need upside swings, and this counts as one.

    13. New Orleans Pelicans – Derik Queen, C/F, Maryland

    Grade: C+

    The Pelicans traded an unprotected 2026 pick to Atlanta, a massive gamble to trade up 10 spots. Queen is an awesome driver and one-and-one scorer as a beefy 6’10 big man, but I’m skeptical of how he fits with New Orleans’ other first round pick, Jeremiah Fears. Both Fears and Queen need to play with the ball in their hands because neither is a good shooter yet. They are also both minus defenders. New Orleans does have some long and rangey wings to put around them in Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, but who knows what to make of the Zion Williamson situation there now. I like Queen in a vacuum, but this is way too much to trade up for him, and that’s why the grade suffers.

    14. San Antonio Spurs – Carter Bryant, F, Arizona

    Grade: B+

    Bryant has an ideal frame for an NBA forward at 6’8, 220 pounds, with a 7’1 wingspan. He’s one of the most explosive athletes in this class, which he leveraged to put up huge block and steal rates defensively. His offense is mostly undeveloped to this point, but he showed solid spot-up shooting at Arizona by hitting 37 percent of his threes as a freshman. What worries me about Bryant is that 80 percent of his baskets were assisted, and he can’t do much with the ball in his hands. That’s less of a concern for a team with Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper on the roster. This is a good fit between player and team,

    15. Oklahoma City Thunder – Thomas Sorber, C, Georgetown

    Grade: A-

    Sorber is super long and super strong center with a 7’6 wingspan and 260+ pound frame. He’s a throwback big who sets hard screens, rebounds, and protects the rim. He doesn’t currently shoot threes and he doesn’t have great vertical athleticism yet. Still, this is an awesome fit to the OKC roster, and he should allow the team to move off Isaiah Hartenstein eventually for a cheaper backup center as the roster gets more expensive.

    A certificate of insurance is a written document that provides proof of insurance coverage, summarizing key details such as the type of policy, coverage limits, policyholder name, effective dates, and the insurer’s contact information. It is commonly used in business contracts to show that a party has the required insurance in place, such as general liability or workers’ compensation. Understanding how to read a certificate of insurance is essential for verifying that the coverage meets contractual requirements.

    If you’re an experienced business person, certificates of insurance are probably not new to you. You’ve likely requested and read one many times before. But can you read a certificate of insurance from top to bottom and be sure that you understand everything there?

    On the other hand, if you are a new startup or small business owner, you possibly haven’t even had the chance to come across, let alone read, a certificate of insurance. They could be a true mystery for you then. So, let’s first explain briefly what a certificate of insurance is.

    Simply put, a certificate of insurance (COI) is proof of having insurance coverage. It is a document that summarizes your insurance policies and provides the necessary coverage details when your clients or vendors, for example, request that from you.

    The certificate of insurance is valid for as long as your policy is active. Once your policy expires, your certificate can only be used to prove that you had insurance coverage at a given period, but it doesn’t help with future projects.

    You can obtain a certificate for any type of insurance policy you have in place with your insurer(s). The most common types of certificates insureds request are the certificate of liability insurance and property insurance certificate.

    Certificate of liability insurance can list the details of the requested liability policies, such as general liability, errors & omissions (professional liability), workers compensation, or employers’ liability, for example.

    Commercial property insurance certificate provides details of the commercial property insurance policy, outlining coverage information and insured perils. Banks usually request this type of certificate from their clients because they hold the mortgage over the property when giving out loans.

    In What Situations Do Businesses Need a COI?

    Whenever you are starting a new project or a partnership, you should ensure that the new parties you work with provide adequate insurance policy certificates. You don’t want to be responsible for the claims related to their work and suffer financial losses in the process.

    Also, you shouldn’t be surprised when the same is asked of you. Providing a COI to your partners proves that you run a financially responsible business that is fully insured and poses no legal liability to them. If you are a startup looking to raise funding, you can expect investors to ask for your certificate of directors and officers liability insurance.

    A certificate of insurance provides security to all the parties listed in the contract and involved in the project. If you rent some equipment, lease new office space, or add a new supplier to your product chain, all involved parties will likely need to provide proof of insurance.

    If you plan to renovate your offices or any other facilities you own and want to hire contractors to do that job for you, ask them for their certificate of insurance. Mistakes and accidents happen, and you don’t want to be liable unless you are responsible for them.

    You also have the option of adding an “additional insured” to your liability policy when you start working with them. You add the additional insured to your coverage by including an endorsement that lists them as added insured to your current policy. Note, however, that this depends on your primary policy and the terms you have agreed with your insurer, and you might have to pay an additional fee.

    What Are the Main Elements of a COI?

    The good thing about COIs is that there are standardized forms that most insurance carriers, brokers, and agents use to provide proof of insurance to their clients. Those forms are called ACORD certificates, named after the nonprofit organization that developed them, The Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development (ACORD).

    Assembling hundreds of insurance companies from across the globe under one organizational umbrella, ACORD (the Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development) has evolved into one of the most influential standards-setting bodies in the insurance and related financial services industries. Over the past 50 years, ACORD has played a central role in shaping how insurance companies communicate, exchange information, and streamline their operations.

    Originally established to address inefficiencies in data sharing among insurers, agents, and brokers, ACORD has developed a vast array of standardized forms, data models, and electronic protocols that have become foundational to the industry’s modern infrastructure. These standards cover everything from property and casualty insurance to life, annuities, and reinsurance, ensuring that data can move seamlessly between systems, organizations, and jurisdictions, regardless of the technology platforms in use.

    ACORD forms—such as certificates of insurance, applications, and claims documents—are now widely recognized and used throughout the global insurance marketplace, enabling faster transactions, reducing errors, and supporting regulatory compliance. Moreover, ACORD’s data standards support digital transformation by facilitating automation, improving interoperability, and laying the groundwork for advanced analytics and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain. As the insurance industry faces increasing pressure to modernize, reduce costs, and meet rising customer expectations, ACORD’s role has become more vital than ever.

    By fostering collaboration among carriers, technology providers, and industry stakeholders, ACORD continues to drive innovation and operational efficiency. In doing so, it helps create a more responsive, transparent, and connected insurance ecosystem that can adapt to future demands while maintaining the integrity and trust that underpin the industry. Through its decades of work, ACORD has not only improved the way insurers do business but also strengthened the infrastructure that supports risk management and financial security worldwide. Assembling hundreds of insurance companies worldwide under its roof, ACORD is now a standards-forming body for insurance services.

    The most commonly used ACORD certificates are ACORD 25 and ACORD 27 and 28. Insurers use ACORD 25 for proof of liability insurance and ACORD 27 or 28 to provide evidence of property insurance.

    We will use the example of an ACORD 25 certificate form to explain the main elements of a COI. Other certificates they created are similar since they all follow the pattern that ACORD provides. Let’s look at the sections all ACORD 25 certificates have:

    1. Date: This is merely the certificate issuance date.
    2. Disclaimer: The statement indicating that this document is proof of insurance but doesn’t in any way amend, extend, or alter the agreed coverage(s) named in the certificate.
    3. Producer: The name of the insurer, agent, or broker who handled the insurance purchase and issued the certificate to the insured. The field should include the name and the business address.
    4. Insured: This field refers to the policyholder. It should state the name of the individual or business entity holding the policy and their business address, just like the previous field.
    5. Insurer(s) affording coverage: This section lists the names and NAIC numbers of insurance carriers providing the listed coverages to the insured. If there are multiple insurers, their names should stand in separate lines, as Insurer A, Insurer B, and so on.
    6. Type of insurance (+ Insr. ltr:): All the relevant insurance coverages are listed in this section, right next to the “Insurance letter” box. The Insurance letter indicates which carrier holds what policy, and they match the companies from the “Insurer(s) affording coverage” section. This field already contains a list of some liability policies (such as general liability or automobile) and some blank space to add additional policies for which the policyholder needs proof of possessing.
    7. Policy EFF: The policy effective date is when the named coverage begins.
    8. Policy EXP: The policy expiration date shows when the coverage ends under the named policy.
    9. Policy limits: Lists the limits of each specific coverage within the policy.
    10. Description of operations/locations/vehicles: The producers can use this field to add any properties or entities included on any of the policies as additional insured(s). This space is also for any existing waivers of subrogation.
    11. Certificate holder: The name of the person/business who requested the certificate.
    12. Cancellation: The notice stating that the producer will notify the certificate holder if either party cancels the policy before its expiration date.
    13. Authorized representative: The place for the signature of the authorized agent or broker.
    14. Additional remarks page: If the space left in field 10 was insufficient to include all additional insureds, properties, or waivers, the producer should add all the necessary information here.

    How to Read a Certificate of Insurance Form?

    Most of these fields are self-explanatory and contain all the necessary information for the certificate holder. However, there are a few things you should look into when reading a COI. Suppose that you are looking at an ACORD 25 certificate provided by a business partner right now. Here’s what you should pay attention to:

    • Does the business name of the insured match the name of the partner/vendor with whom you are starting the business relationship?
    • Does the policy expire before the date you expect to complete your cooperation? Ask for the timely new certificate upon the policy renewal if it does.
    • Does the certificate list all the necessary coverages?
    • Are the limits to the listed policies adequate? If not, you should ask the other party to increase their policy limits to match or exceed your own.

    If everything seems to be in order, you are good to go. However, you should be aware that a COI can be counterfeit. The best way to prevent getting one of these is to be careful when choosing your contractors, vendors, and business partners. Make sure they are reliable and potentially recommended by someone from your business network.

    Should you have any reason to suspect a COI you received is fake, a few things could help you determine that. 

    First, as we said before, almost all insurance brokers and carriers use standardized ACORD forms. Check for the recognizable logo in the upper left corner; if it’s not there, that could mean the certificate is not genuine.

    You can also search the Internet to check if the producer’s information is correct. Extend the search to their website to check if they offer the insurance lines listed in the certificate. Also, the document shouldn’t be editable because it would indicate that it could have been tampered with before it reached you.

    Another sign could be weird formatting. If you notice some strange zeros, different fonts, or inconsistent capitalization, that could be a reason to suspect foul play.

    In case you still have suspicions about the document’s authenticity, you can even ask the carrier directly to send you the insured’s proof of insurance.

    How to Obtain a Certificate of Insurance?

    Traditionally, this process involved going back and forth between you, your broker, and your carrier, potentially printing the documents and ensuring they reached your partners. Had there been some irregularities, the certificate would have to go back to you and then to your broker to start the process again from the beginning.

    Luckily, things have changed over the years, and obtaining a COI has become significantly easier. The process has become even more streamlined with the expansion of insurtechs, which are slowly but steadily modernizing the traditional insurance industry. The process for requesting a COI from your broker is now digitized and considerably more efficient than it used to be.

    I may have overdone the volume of riding this week, but the weather has been nice so it’s been fun. Last Tuesday we did a group ride in the hills East of Gilroy that started at the Mendoza ranch entrance to Harvey Bear park. I usually catch a ride up there from my friend’s house, but lately due to SI joint issues I haven’t been able to ride my upright on this long of a ride, and I was afraid my recumbent wouldn’t fit in her vehicle. So I rode the recumbent from home to the start, making this a total of 90 km (56 miles) for me (and 3 batteries). It was a great ride, though. From the valley this time of year, it looks really dry in the east hills, and it’s always amazing how pretty it is when you get up in them. On Wednesday I did one of my hard rides, 85 km in 3 hours 25 minutes, with a bit over two hours brisk tempo followed by some intervals and sprints. Thursday was a hard upper body session followed by an easy recovery ride, then Friday I went to a long brisk tempo ride of 3 Hours 20 minutes. Then yesterday was some easy arm-cycling and an easy recovery ride for a total of 70 minutes.

    Turmeric is a wonderful spice with so many benefits. I love using it in cooking, natural beauty recipes, and especially this refreshing lemonade! We keep this turmeric lemonade recipe on hand as a festive drink for summer barbecues, park picnics, and friends just stopping by.

    Easy Turmeric Lemonade

    We mostly know turmeric as a cornerstone of Indian cuisine and curry powders, mustards, and more. Unfortunately, many of the foods I love adding turmeric to, like soups, stews, and warm golden milk, don’t sound as good in hot summer weather.

    This turmeric lemonade recipe is the ideal solution and a family favorite. I’ve been making it often for the kids so they can rehydrate while they’re playing outside and spending days at the beach. It’s incredibly easy to make and tastes great!

    The turmeric provides a gorgeous color, but its earthy taste is mostly hidden by the tang of the lemon. I like to use liquid stevia to sweeten this, although any natural sweetener would work. Honey or maple syrup are some delicious options!

    So why is turmeric so great? Health experts often recommend turmeric as a way to help lower inflammation in the body. Thousands of studies show its benefits in promoting heart health, mental health, reducing inflammation, and ensuring balanced blood sugar.     Iced Turmeric Lemonade Recipe

    This refreshing turmeric lemonade combines earthy turmeric with fresh lemon and natural sweetness for a delicious summer drink.

    • Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender.

    • Blend on high for about 60 seconds, or until the ice is fully crushed and smooth.

    • Let rest for 30 seconds to allow the foam to settle.

    • Serve immediately, over extra ice if desired.

    In today’s competitive landscape, the lines between product and price offerings among Asian insurers are blurring, compelling companies to find innovative ways to capture customer attention and secure their business. As a result, customer engagement and experience have become paramount to success. Despite insurers’ efforts to prioritize customer-centric approaches and personalized experiences, a staggering 74% of consumers have abandoned purchases due to feeling overwhelmed, according to “The Empowered Consumer, Accenture’s global consumer research 2024. Moreover, consumer trust and loyalty remain alarmingly low, with just 39% of consumers believing that companies have their best interests at heart.

    Why is this happening? Based on recent studies carried out by Accenture, both globally and in the Chinese market, we have summarized some key findings.  

    • Information overload: Consumers often encounter excessive information, leading to frustration as they struggle to filter and validate the information. 62% of consumers feel overwhelmed by the abundance of options available to them.  
    • Crowded market: In Reinvent Relevance in the Age of Overload, we found that nearly 80% of Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) across industries in China note that product offerings and marketing strategies have become homogenized. While more options exist, this has created confusion and decision paralysis among consumers. 
    • Evolving customer expectations: Consumers are increasingly focused on buying brands rather than just buying products, and a positive brand experience is particularly important for insurance as purchasing decisions are less frequent compared to other consumer goods. To succeed in this complex environment, insurers must reinvent customer relationships – through adapting, innovating, and leveraging technology.  

    Taking these into account, this blog focuses on three levers to foster and maintain profitable growth, by enhancing customer engagement and experience: 

    1. Drive data-driven marketing with AI:   

    Advancements in data analytics and artificial intelligence have made hyper-personalization more accessible, guiding customers through their decision-making journey. 94% of Chinese  CMOs believe that Gen AI capabilities can help enhance organization efficiency and agility in response to market demands. 

    The integration of AI tools enables marketing campaigns to focus on relevant topics and upcoming plays, generating marketing messages to stay top of mind. It also enables agents with tailored recommendations and advanced insights based on customer interests, engagement history and lifestyle factors.  

    We see insurers differentiating themselves by developing AI capabilities that match products to customers based on a variety of data factors, providing recommendations based on the degree of alignment between the products and the customers’ needs. Demand for usage and behavior-based products and services continues since the covid-era spike in 2020.  

    While data is the cornerstone of AI capabilities, many organizations struggle, with 65% facing challenges in building end-to-end data foundation. They often lack clarity on which data is relevant and are uncertain where to begin. As insurers navigate this complex landscape, prioritizing data organization and fostering collaboration between technology and human insight could unlock the transformative potential of AI. 

    2. Embrace marketing technology to drive innovation and speed

    68% of Chinese CMOs feel that customer expectations are evolving faster than their companies can keep up. Being able to respond quickly to these demands is crucial for success. To bridge this gap, insurers need to harness Marketing Technology (Martech) to gain valuable insights into customer preferences, enabling quicker responses through automated campaign workflows and more targeted marketing. This means delivering campaigns at the right time and in the right format, tailored to each customer’s unique preferences.  

    To further enhance their marketing strategies, insurers should consider integrating Martech into their core and data platforms. This integration can create a more seamless journey from campaign planning, execution to tracking, allowing marketing resources to focus on their primary task – driving creative innovation – rather than getting bogged down in administrative work.
