Homemade Sweet Chili Sauce (With Clean Ingredients)

If you’re a sweet and spicy flavors fan, then this homemade sweet chili sauce may just be your new go-to condiment! It’s made with clean ingredients (no high fructose corn syrup here). Instead, you’ll find honey, garlic, and red pepper flakes for some kick. Sweet chili sauce is perfect for drizzling, dipping, or adding some sweet heat to your favorite dishes.

    What is Sweet Chili Sauce?

Well, it’s delicious for one! Unlike my hot honey recipe, this one is cooked to help the flavors meld together. You’ll find natural honey for sweetness, coconut aminos and garlic for that umami flavor, and rice vinegar and lemon for a little acid to balance out the sweet. And of course, red pepper flakes for heat.

Since this is homemade, you can add more or less pepper flakes depending on how spicy you like it. The recipe also uses non-gmo cornstarch to thicken, but arrowroot should work if you need a sub.

How to Use Sweet Chili Sauce

This works great as a dipping sauce for things like chicken wings, but it’s equally at home with roasted veggies. I also like adding it to stir-fries to give them a little zest. Try it with roasted or fried potatoes or pork. It’s way better than anything you’d find in a bottle at the store (hello MSG!), plus you can feel good about the ingredients.

It’s easy to make and comes together in just a few minutes. And it lasts for up to three weeks in the fridge, so it’s easy to keep on hand to grab for a meal. Plus, it’s free of any artificial additives, dyes, or weird stuff, so you can have all of the sweet spice with none of the junk.

Here’s how to make clean, sweet chili sauce that can elevate any meal!

    Homemade Sweet Chili Sauce Recipe

This sweet and spicy sauce is perfect for dipping, drizzling, or glazing!

    • In a medium saucepan, add all of the ingredients. Whisk everything together to ensure the cornstarch is fully dissolved before heating.

    • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the sauce to a gentle boil. Once it begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. This will help the sauce thicken and the flavors to meld together.

    • After 5 minutes, remove the sauce from the heat. Let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes to thicken further. You’ll notice it becoming glossy and smooth as it cools.

    • Once the sauce has cooled to room temperature, pour it into a clean jar or bottle. Seal tightly and store it in the refrigerator. This sauce will stay fresh for up to 3 weeks.

Can jailed Duterte be Davao City mayor? Here’s what the law says

MANILA, Philippines — Former President Rodrigo Duterte overwhelmingly won the Davao City mayoral race last May, despite being locked away at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands.

The ex-leader was arrested and turned over to the international tribunal to face allegations of crimes against humanity committed during his administration’s drug war, in which an estimated 12,000 to 30,000 people were killed.

Duterte’s term as Davao City mayor is set to begin on June 30, but he is still detained at the ICC, awaiting his confirmation of charges hearing on September 23.

Can a jailed Duterte take office as mayor?

Here is what the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) says in a position paper by Undersecretary for External, Legal and Legislative Affairs Romeo Benitez:

Benitez said no Philippine law disqualifies Duterte from taking his oath of office despite being detained at the ICC.

In fact, the Constitution, the Administrative Code, and the Local Government Code require all public officials to take an oath of office before assuming duties, the DILG undersecretary stressed.

Further, in a chance interview with reporters in Quezon City last May, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said they recognized Duterte’s victory in the Davao City mayoral race.

READ: Remulla to ask ICC if PH consul could swear in Duterte as Davao mayor

    Who can administer Duterte’s oath?

Benitez pointed to Section 41 of the Administrative Code, which provides that the following officers have the general authority to administer oaths of office:

    • president
    • vice president
    • members and secretaries of either house of Congress
    • judiciary members
    • department secretaries
    • provincial governors and vice governors
    • city mayors
    • municipal mayors
    • bureau directors
    • regional directors
    • clerks of courts
    • registrars of deeds
    • other civilian officers in the public service of the government of the Philippines whose appointments are vested in the president and are subject to confirmation by the Commission on Appointments
    • all other constitutional officers
    • notaries public
    • barangay chairpersons

“In administering oaths of office, personal appearance is required as the oath needs to be signed in the presence of the authorized official,” Benitez said.

In Duterte’s case, the nearest officials authorized to administer the oath of office are the Philippine ambassador and consul to the Netherlands, he went on.

“Both [are] appointees of the President and subject to the confirmation of the Commission on Appointments,” he added.

    J. Eduardo Malaya is the Philippines’ ambassador to the country’s embassy in the Hague.

Can the Philippine ambassador and consul administer Duterte’s oath at the ICC?

Benitez cited Article 6 of the Vienna Convention, which states: “A consular officer may, in special circumstances, with the consent of the receiving State, exercise his functions outside his consular district.”

The Vienna Convention is an international agreement on diplomatic and consular relations, to which the Philippines and the Netherlands are parties.

“The Department, however, shall defer to the existing rules and mechanisms of the Department of Foreign Affairs on this specific authority and the matter of securing ICC permission for said purpose,” Benitez said.

Remulla previously said the DILG will ask the ICC if the Philippines can send a consul to administer Duterte’s oath.

READ: ‘Work from Hague’: Duterte wins mayor’s race, but can he govern?

Will Duterte be able to assume office if he takes his oath?

“If [Duterte] is able to take an oath of office, his detention renders him both physically and legally temporarily incapable of performing his duties and functions as mayor,” Benitez said.

He pointed to Section 46 of the Local Government Code, which provides that the vice-mayor will automatically assume the office as acting mayor.

In this case, Vice Mayor-elect Sebastian Duterte will take his father’s place in an acting capacity.

And who will be his vice-mayor?

The highest-ranking Sangguniang Bayan member will be designated by the DILG secretary as acting vice mayor, Benitez said, citing Administrative Order No. 15 series of 2018.

What happens if Duterte is unable to take his oath?

Benitez pointed to Section 11 of the Batas Pambansa No. 881 or the Omnibus Election Code, which states: “The office of any official elected who fails or refuses to take his oath of office within six months from his proclamation shall be considered vacant, unless said failure is for a cause or causes beyond his control.”

“Having failed to qualify, a permanent vacancy ensues in his office calling for the assumption of the vice-mayor as the new local chief executive and the highest-ranking sanggunian member as vice-mayor, pursuant to Section 44 of the Local Government Code,” Benitez said.

“The DILG shall recognize the validity of the oath of office administered to a public official, including FPRRD, so long as it complies with Philippine constitutional and legal requirements. We shall monitor the developments and act accordingly,” he added.

Protect Your Brokerage Accounts From ACATS Transfer Fraud

When you transfer investments in a brokerage account from one broker to another, it goes by a system called ACATS, which stands for Automated Customer Account Transfer Service. Some people call it ACAT. I’m going with the official name ACATS.

ACATS transfers keep the holdings intact and don’t trigger taxes. I used ACATS when I transferred a part of my account from Fidelity to US Bancorp Investments recently for the 4% rewards card.

With all the hacks and data leaks in recent years, fraudulent ACATS transfers have also become a problem. I read a report of this type of fraud from a poster ww340 on the Bogleheads forum.

I discovered that our taxable account at Vanguard had been slowly pilfered of approximately $100,000 in stocks transferred by ACATS to 2 different brokerage accounts that were not mine over a period of time.

These stock transfers were taken out of our account each time we received a dividend. … … Every few months 750 shares of that fund were transferred. Transfers were made 3 times before I realized it was happening.

Source: ACAT fraud with a twist – Vanguard, Bogleheads Forum.

We don’t want our investments stolen from us. How do we protect our accounts from ACATS fraud?

    Fraudulent Account In Your Name

ACATS is a pull-only system. All transfer requests start at the receiving firm. A transfer requires a medallion signature guarantee if names don’t match between the receiving and the sending accounts. Therefore thieves usually start with creating a fraudulent account in your name at another broker. They don’t have to hack into your account when they could just pull from an account they control.

Opening a brokerage account doesn’t require a credit check. Freezing your credit doesn’t stop it. Freezing your ChexSystems report doesn’t stop it either because that’s only for banks and credit unions. If someone has your name, Social Security Number, address, and phone number, they have all the information to open a brokerage account in your name. All those pieces of information have been leaked in repeated hacks.

Because thieves can choose paperless delivery at many financial institutions, you may have no clue when a fraudulent account is opened in your name somewhere out there. Some brokers still send mail. You should be on alert if you receive mail from a financial institution you don’t use.

    Account Number and Statement

An ACATS transfer request requires the account number of the source account. Some brokers ask for a recent account statement from the source account but it’s often optional. My recent transfer went through without a statement.

An ACATS transfer doesn’t require confirmation by the customer at the sending firm either. A transfer would go through if someone had your account number and the names matched on both accounts. Therefore you should safeguard your account number from falling into the wrong hands. That’s the critical piece of information for a successful ACATS transfer.

A partial transfer also requires knowing your holdings, which are listed in your online account or statements. Therefore you should protect your account statements.

Choose paperless statements and tax forms. They are more secure than hard copies sent by mail. Store those documents securely.

Your brokerage account should have the strongest 2-factor authentication. Don’t let thieves reset your password to get your account number or holdings. See Security Hardware for Vanguard, Fidelity, and Schwab Accounts. If you submit your statement to someone to qualify for a loan, black out the account number.

Your email should also have the strongest 2-factor authentication. Don’t let thieves find your account number or holdings in some emails. See Secure Your Email Account to Prevent Wire Fraud.

    Enable Lockdown

Fidelity is the only broker I know that offers an optional Money Transfer Lockdown feature. It doesn’t stop all the ways money can go out of an account but a partial lockdown is better than no lockdown. Fidelity will reject all ACATS transfers when you turn on this setting on an account.

Enabling the lockdown also stops some legit transfers you initiate. You’ll have to disable the lockdown, do your transfer, and re-enable the lockdown. It’s a tradeoff between convenience and protection.

    Transfer Alerts

An ACATS transfer doesn’t require an approval from you before it goes through but it’s helpful if your broker at least sends you an alert when it receives a transfer request or immediately after it processes a transfer. Some brokers don’t do any of that.

Fidelity sent me an alert when they received my legit transfer request through US Bancorp Investments. When I transferred from Vanguard last year, Vanguard didn’t send me anything either before or after they processed the transfer. A fraudulent transfer could’ve gone through without my knowledge. Vanguard only sent me a letter after a few weeks saying the account was closed. I would’ve received nothing if it had been a partial transfer and the account was still open, as was the fraudulent transfer against ww340.

If your broker notifies you by mail, it’s helpful if you open it. The poster ww340 said,

I had everything online and usually only get proxy votes or fund information sheets, so I do not always open Vanguard mail.

That was a mistake. Use a broker that sends you alerts about these transfers either before or after the transfer is processed. The sooner you know, the better chances you have to stop the transfer or reverse it. Make a habit of reading everything that comes from your broker.

    A Flood of Spam

Beware when you receive a sudden flood of spam emails and texts. It’s a telltale sign you’re under attack somewhere. Thieves flood you with spam to bury the notification emails and texts from your financial institution. This happened to ww340:

My email got hundreds or thousands of spam emails every time a fraudelent order was placed. My email had 73,000 emails with 99% of those were spam and spam subscriptions. So that hid the fraud when the notices were hidden among the spam.

Call your banks and brokers immediately and tell them to stop all transactions if you see a surge of spam emails or texts.

    Check Your Accounts

Some people suggest not checking your investment accounts often. This helps you avoid trading on fear or greed. That’s good if your broker will notify you of outgoing activities and you’re on top of the notifications. Otherwise your account or shares could be long gone before you notice.

Brokers send you account statements monthly or quarterly for a reason. You don’t need to check your accounts daily. I suggest checking monthly for unusual activities.

    Keep Independent Records

An ACATS transfer can be a full transfer of the entire account or a partial transfer of select holdings. A full account transfer is easier to detect when you see your entire account is gone. A partial transfer such as leeching 750 shares at a time is more difficult to see.

Portfolio values fluctuate with the market prices but you should match the number of shares in your account with your independent records. Don’t just look at the total value of your account. Look at the number of shares in each holding. Thieves that stole from ww340 tried to hide their theft by transferring out shares shortly after a dividend was paid. You may not detect it easily if you only look at the total value.

Many old-timers use Quicken to track their accounts. I use Microsoft Money, which was discontinued 10+ years ago but you can still find the last free release on archive.org. It still works on Windows 11. What system you use doesn’t matter as long as it helps you track your shares independently. An online aggregator such as Empower or Fidelity’s Full View isn’t the best tool for this purpose because they don’t maintain an independent source of truth. An online aggregator only reports what’s currently in your accounts.

You should know how many shares you should have in each holding at any time. Compare them with how many shares you see in your account. You’ll know when you see a difference. Having fewer accounts, fewer holdings, and fewer transactions will make this task easier.

    ***

ACATS was designed before all the hacks and data leaks. Now the account number is the only secret that prevents a fraudulent transfer. We must do everything we can to protect this secret. It helps to turn on the lockdown setting if your broker offers it. It also helps to use a broker that notifies you of pending and completed transfers.

Fraudulent ACATS transfers can be reversed. We want to detect them sooner rather than later. Check your account activities monthly and keep independent records.

Electric Recumbent Adventure Continues – BionicOldGuy

I have finally gotten my recumbent back on the road in electric-assist mode. This turned out to be quite an odyssey. I pursued two parallel approaches. First I tried to fix the wheel with broken spokes It turns out you can get custom spoke lengths online so I got replacements in 228 mm. Then I swapped out the five broken spokes with new ones, and tried to tighten them by feel so they matched their neighbors. The wheel appeared pretty true so I took it for a ride to try it out. It was badly out of round, meaning there was a very noticeable up and down motion of the front wheel. So I took the wheel into my local bike shop. They were unable to fix it because they found there was a permanent bend to the rim causing a flat spot. Remember that I had first discovered 5 broken spokes at once. Whatever I did, like hit a really bad pothole, that popped the 5 spokes must have also bent the rim.

Mine wasn’t quite this bad. https://wheelbuilder.co.za/broken-spokes/

So that wheel must be rebuilt. This is not something they do at my local shop so I’m nosing around for a custom wheel builder. Alternatively I could just get an inexpensive truing stand and a new rim, and rebuild the wheel myself. This doesn’t look too difficult for the standard “two-cross” method based on what I’ve read and seen in videos.

Fortunately, there was the parallel path. Last November, the makers of my ebike kit, Swytchbike had a great sale on their kits. I wanted to get some spare batteries, and it turned out that with the sale a replacement kit was no more expensive than just getting the batteries, so I ordered one. When it arrived a few months later I put its batteries into service but set the kit aside. I finally got around to trying fitting it on my recumbent when I had the broken spoke problem. Unfortunately the wheel did not quite fit in the dropout slots on the bike. I contacted customer service, and they told me I was outside there return window (that’s what happens when you wait two months before actually trying a product). But fortunately I could just file the wheel so it fits in the dropouts (for which they had a brief video). This turned out to be quite a workout. I think my right arm is bigger than my left after the filing. It was very satisfying when it finally fit.

The new wheel worked like a champ plugged into my existing controller. The only adjustment was setting the wheel size on the controller to 20″ instead of 26″. I took the bike for a test ride and it was delightful.

Recumbent with 20″ front wheel (pardon the messy garage)

This matches the configuration of my previous recumbent, the 26-20 Bacchetta Giro. I had forgotten how comfortable that was. So this is my ride for the foreseeable future, though I’ll consider to pursue getting the 26″ motor wheel rebuilt.

  • Drinking Alcohol Raises Dementia Risk and Causes Brain Lesions

Drinking Alcohol Raises Dementia Risk and Causes Brain Lesions

Do you enjoy alcoholic drinks every now and then? While it’s commonly believed that moderate drinking is fine,1 the truth is that alcohol, in any amount, ravages your body. Previous research has shown that it increases your risk for premature death and cancer. Now, there’s a growing body of evidence showing that it also damages your brain, leading to dementia.

Any Intake of Alcohol Raises Your Risk for Brain Damage

A study published in Neurology explored how alcohol consumption affects the brain over time, particularly in older adults.2,3 Researchers, based in Brazil, examined brain autopsies from 1,781 people who have an average age of 75 years old at death. Then, they compared those findings to how much alcohol each person drank throughout life as reported by family members. Here’s what they found:

Defining the parameters of the study — The participants were split into four groups — those who never drank, moderate drinkers (up to seven drinks per week), heavy drinkers (eight or more drinks weekly), and former heavy drinkers who had quit.

A single drink was defined as containing 14 grams (g) of alcohol, which is roughly equivalent to 350 milliliters (ml) of beer, 150 ml of wine, or 45 ml of liquor.

Those who drank regularly had more vascular brain lesions — Among heavy drinkers, 44% had vascular brain lesions. That compares to 40% for those who never drank, and 50% for former heavy drinkers.

Vascular brain lesions are also known as hyaline arteriolosclerosis, which is the thickening and stiffening of the small blood vessels in your brain. These lesions reduce blood flow (thus oxygen delivery) to brain cells, which leads to tissue damage, cognitive dysfunction, and long-term memory problems.

The presence of lesions persisted even after quitting — Even former drinkers who quit years before death showed lasting damage. That means alcohol’s impact on your brain is not only acute, but also cumulative.

Your lifestyle greatly influences the risk for brain lesions — After adjusting for other health factors like smoking, exercise, and age, heavy drinkers had a 133% higher chance of developing these brain lesions compared to those who never drank.

Former heavy drinkers weren’t far behind, with an 89% increased risk. Even moderate drinkers still had a 60% higher risk for brain damage than lifelong abstainers.

Alcohol increases your risk for dementia — In addition to vascular damage, the researchers also examined another biomarker of brain degeneration called tau tangles. These are abnormal protein clumps that interfere with neuron function and are linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Heavy drinkers had a 41% higher risk of developing tau tangles, while former heavy drinkers had a 31% increased risk compared to those who never consumed alcohol.

Former heavy drinkers had a significantly lower brain mass ratio — This means this test group’s brains were smaller relative to their body size. Shrinking brain mass sets the stage for poor memory, slower thinking, and more difficulty managing daily tasks. Worse yet, this group also scored lower in cognitive function tests.

Drinking shortens your lifespan — Heavy drinkers died an average of 13 years earlier than those who never drank.

The findings are clear. Even if you feel fine now, and even if your drinking is within what’s often defined as “moderate,” your brain is likely experiencing asymptomatic injury. These findings debunk the assumption that a beer here or there is harmless.

Further Research Shows That No Alcohol Intake Is Safe for Your Brain

A study published in eClinicalMedicine set out to answer a long-standing hypothesis — does alcohol cause dementia, or are the two loosely associated?4

To answer that, researchers analyzed data from 313,958 United Kingdom (U.K.) participants who currently drank alcohol, all of whom were free of dementia when the study began (2006 to 2010). Over a follow-up period that lasted until 2021, researchers tracked those who developed dementia. They categorized alcohol consumption levels and matched these to genetic profiles designed to estimate lifelong alcohol exposure.

Genes leaning toward higher alcohol intake were more at risk for dementia — Using individual-level analysis, researchers found that every increase in genetically predicted alcohol consumption pushed dementia risk higher. Interestingly, the strongest effects were seen in women. As noted by the researchers:

“Our analyses found a distinctly more significant association between alcohol consumption and dementia risk among women drinkers … who typically had lower rates of other risk factors, such as smoking, compared to men. For men, the presence of multiple risk factors could mask alcohol’s specific effects.”5

The study also invalidated the idea that there’s a safe range for drinking — The researchers looked for a non-linear relationship — a curve where low-level drinking might be neutral or even protective, but didn’t find one. “Our findings suggested that there was no safe level of alcohol consumption for dementia,” the authors wrote.

The data is clear regarding alcohol consumption — To check their results, the researchers created positive control criteria — a known consequence of alcohol use — such as alcoholic liver disease. Their model showed that people with alcohol-promoting genes had a much higher risk of liver damage.

Then, the researchers used age as a negative control (something alcohol doesn’t influence) and found no relationship. These comparisons confirmed that their models were functioning properly, and that the dementia link was genuine — not a statistical coincidence.

Cut Back on Alcohol and Repair the Damage Before It’s Too Late

I’ll admit that I bought into the many common myths about alcohol. I used to drink alcohol a few times a year, believing that it was relatively harmless — and even beneficial. But after diving into the research further, I’ve changed my stance.

Now, I don’t drink any alcohol at all, and I recommend you do the same. If you’re drinking regularly, even a few drinks a week, you are risking your cognition. As noted by the research earlier, there is no safe level of alcohol when it comes to protecting your memory, your ability to think clearly, or your overall brain health. It’s time for you to take control of your brain health again, starting with these strategies:

    1. Cut your alcohol intake to zero — The most important step is to stop the damage at its source. If you’re drinking daily, or even several times weekly, you’re actively impairing blood flow to your brain and shrinking the areas responsible for memory and cognition.

If you’re not ready to quit completely, start by eliminating weekday drinking or limiting yourself to special occasions. But remember, “moderation” isn’t protective like you’ve been told. That idea has been fully debunked. Your brain is better off without it.

    2. Take N-acetylcysteine (NAC) before and after occasional alcohol use — If you are going to drink for an upcoming wedding, holiday, or reunion with friends, NAC is your backup plan. It supports your liver’s ability to neutralize acetaldehyde, the toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism that damages DNA.

Take a 200-milligram dose 30 minutes before drinking alongside vitamins B1 and B6, as these nutrients also help reduce the toxic side effects of alcohol. But as mentioned earlier, there’s still no substitute for avoiding alcohol completely.

    3. Replace alcohol with beverages that nourish you — If alcohol is your way to unwind, reward yourself, or deal with stress, it’s time to change your routine. Switch to other drinks, such as teas, freshly homemade juices with pulp, or pure sparkling water with natural flavors added.

    4. Rebuild your mitochondria with healthy carbohydrate intake — Alcohol breaks mitochondrial function. To restore it, you need fuel, and that is glucose.

I recommend aiming for 200 to 250 grams of carbs per day, mostly from sources like white rice, fruit juices with pulp, and whole fruits. This gives your body what it needs to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of every cell, especially brain cells. And if you’ve struggled with brain fog or fatigue before, this shift alone has the power to drastically change your health for the better.

    5. Start healing your gut to reduce endotoxin load — Alcohol damages your gut, allowing endotoxins to be produced. Endotoxins are bacterial fragments that leak into your bloodstream and cause inflammation, especially in your brain. To repair your gut, again, stop drinking alcohol. Moreover, add fermented foods into your diet to diversify your gut flora, allowing better crosstalk between your gut and brain.

    Strategies for Eliminating Alcohol Consumption

Are you having trouble quitting alcohol? Dr. Brooke Scheller, founder of Functional Sobriety (a nutrition-based program for alcohol reduction) and author of “How to Eat to Change How You Drink,” offers several helpful tips:

    1. Get curious and educate yourself — Read books, listen to podcasts, and learn about the health impacts of alcohol.

    2. Find community support — Scheller runs an online community called the Functional Sobriety Network. There are many other support groups and resources available as well.

    3. Examine your social media Unfollow accounts that glamorize drinking and follow sober influencers instead.

    4. Address the root causes — Look at why you drink — stress, social pressure, habit — and find healthier alternatives.

    5. Support your body nutritionally — Supplements like L-theanine, L-glutamine, NAC, B-complex vitamins, and milk thistle help with cravings and support detoxification.

    6. Stabilize blood sugar — Increasing protein intake and eating regularly helps reduce alcohol cravings.

    7. Be open about your choice — Scheller encourages people to simply say they’re not drinking for their health if asked.

One of the most powerful shifts Scheller advocates for is changing how you think about alcohol in your life in order to reframe your relationship with drinking:

“Previously, the only people who did quit drinking were people that identified themselves as having a problem or maybe had to quit. And so the first thing I’ll say if you’re listening and you’re interested is you don’t have to have a problem to decide that you want to explore this.

You don’t need to even be that regular of a drinker for you to say, ‘You know what? This is something I may want to explore.’”

In other words, choosing not to drink alcohol is a positive, empowering decision for your health and longevity — not a punishment or deprivation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About the Impact of Alcohol on Brain Health

Q: Is moderate drinking safe for my brain?

A: No. Even moderate drinking — defined as seven or fewer drinks per week — raises your risk for vascular brain lesions by 60% compared to people who never drank alcohol. These lesions reduce blood flow and oxygen in your brain, which leads to cognitive decline and memory issues over time.

Q: Does quitting alcohol reverse the brain damage?

A: According to the research, the answer is no. Former heavy drinkers in the study had even more brain lesions than current heavy drinkers and showed lower brain mass ratios and worse cognitive function. This shows that alcohol’s damage is long-lasting and accumulates over time, even after you stop.

Q: What exactly does alcohol do to the brain?

A: Alcohol causes hyaline arteriolosclerosis, which is the hardening and narrowing of the brain’s small blood vessels. It also increases tau tangles, which are abnormal proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. These changes shrink brain tissue, impair memory, and reduce your ability to think clearly and manage daily tasks.

Q: Is there any safe level of alcohol that doesn’t affect dementia risk?

A: No. Genetic analysis from over 313,958 people showed a direct link between alcohol intake and dementia risk. Researchers found no evidence of a protective effect at any level of drinking — dementia risk increased steadily with every uptick in alcohol consumption.

Q: How can I protect my brain if I’ve been drinking regularly?

A: Start by eliminating alcohol completely to stop further damage. Support your detox pathways with N-acetylcysteine (NAC), repair your mitochondria with healthy carbs like fruit and white rice, and rebuild your gut by avoiding alcohol and adding fermented foods. These steps will help restore brain function and reduce long-term damage.

How to reduce law firm turnover & boost retention

Are you a lawyer living the dream of running your own firm and living life like a true boss? While the billable hours and courtroom wins are part of your success, another significant challenge for law firm owners and managers in 2025 is law firm turnover.

Finding associates can be tough, but keeping them around can be just as much of a challenge, if not more so. According to the ABA Journal, law firm turnover — also known as “attrition” — can cost firms between $200,000 and $500,000 per lawyer lost. With rising costs at top of mind for many practices, law firms simply can’t afford to ignore things like employee turnover.

While the numbers don’t lie and there is a true retention issue in the field, there are ways to combat the trend. Keep reading to find out how law firms can tackle the growing problem of attorney turnover by learning about and understanding its root causes, and implementing effective retention strategies.

What is law firm turnover (and why does it matter)?

Judge's gavel at rest on a desk

Law firm turnover refers to the rate at which associates leave a firm, and the rate at which new employees are hired or join the firm. This key metric reflects the volatility of a firm’s workforce and is typically calculated by dividing the total number of employees leaving or joining by the total number of employees at the firm.

There are certainly plenty of lawyers out there — according to the American Bar Association (ABA), there were more than 1.3 million lawyers in the United States as of January 1, 2024, or roughly four lawyers for every 1,000 residents. Yet Embroker’s 2024 Legal Risk Index Report reveals a surprising paradox: Despite this apparent abundance of lawyers, half (50%) of all law firms surveyed struggled to keep their attorneys in 2023.

    Why does this discrepancy matter?

High law firm turnover can be detrimental to your overall success. After all, a law firm is also a business, and you face substantial costs in recruiting, hiring, and training replacements, not to mention the operational disruptions caused by staff departures.

It can also seriously impact your reputation: A firm known for losing associates may struggle to attract and retain both talent and clients as questions arise about its internal culture and stability.

Why is there this revolving door in the legal field?

Various factors can contribute to high law firm turnover, and to attorney retention in the legal field in general. For starters, there’s been a resurgence of in-office vs. remote roles, and this may be contributing to early exits amongst associates who prefer the work-from-home lifestyle.

Similarly, a firm’s workplace culture can impact an employee’s longevity. Today, people are less likely to stick with it and endure a negative work environment, especially if there’s alternative options to work remote or hybrid.

There’s also pressure for greener employees who may have to pay back their student loans. These younger associates sometimes seek higher paying positions year-after-year simply because incremental increases just won’t move the needle enough for them to cover their expenses. This type of law firm turnover may be a contributing factor behind a recent hiring trend that shows a shift toward more experienced lateral hires, growth in two-tier partner structures, and less emphasis on junior associate hiring.

Overall, most attorneys struggle with trying to achieve work-life balance. If they can’t achieve it at your firm, they’ll keep looking for a better option until they find it.

What lawyers really want from a firm

When you take a step back and look at what typical legal environments yield (long hours; intense competition; pressure, etc.) it’s not so shocking that associates would want something more balanced.

So, what do lawyers want in a workplace that firms can actually provide?

“After nearly a decade in law firms and building a global analyst program for future attorneys, I’ve seen the cost of outdated models,” shares Ashley Kera, Kera Coaching & Consulting LLC.  “Today’s workforce especially Millennials and Gen Z expects more: Real work-life integration, not just billable targets; mentorship, career development, and financial growth; and a culture where they feel supported, not just stretched thin. Firms that fail to evolve will continue to lose their best people.”

Better work-life balance and flexible work options

“Burnout is rampant not because attorneys lack grit, but because they’re expected to sacrifice everything,” shares Kera. Big law firms hire for people power; they know there will be turnover after four years. But smaller and mid-sized firms are more likely to hire for long-term potential. So associates will look for work-life balance, but also expect other opportunities as well.

According to the ABA, law firms must create more flexible work environments to stay competitive. Below are just a few ideas to consider.

    • Hybrid work models: Allow attorneys and other staff to split time between office and remote work based on their role’s requirements and personal preferences.
    • Alternative scheduling options: Offer compressed work weeks, part-time arrangements, or flexible daily schedules that accommodate your employees’ personal responsibilities.
    • Results-oriented work environments: Focus on outcomes rather than on how many hours are worked, or when work is completed.
    • Centralized communication: Use platforms that centralize your firm’s internal communication, so remote and flexible employees remain connected and informed.
    • Well-being initiatives: Offer resources to support employee mental and physical health.

    Technology that improves their workflows

Man sitting at a desk in front of a brick wall, and working on a laptop

There’s no question that administrative tasks can really add to an associate’s already stacked workload and cut into their billable hours — on average, lawyers only bill for 2.3 hours per day. But there’s also no question that these tasks are necessary for your firm to function.

One way to support your employees is by investing in useful tools that can help streamline the more tedious tasks on their to-do lists.

Leveraging AI-powered tools is a good start. AI can provide small firms with the same advantages available to larger firms, such as enhanced research and document review capabilities, allowing lawyers to provide better service to their clients.

AI may be an obvious choice, but there are so many other tools out there that make internal processes easier and improve productivity. Take a look at some of the best law management software platforms available today, including Clio, CosmoLex, My Case and more. These programs can help give back time, and in turn support a better balance for team members.

Your firm may also benefit from a virtual receptionist — for a fee, these can provide 24/7 reception services, appointment scheduling assistance, and more.

    Opportunity for growth and mentorship

Feeling stuck in your position is never a good place to be, especially when you’re repaying law school loans and can’t just leave your job for greener pastures. If career advancement doesn’t come quick enough, or worse, doesn’t seem like a possibility in the next few years, your employees may struggle to see the value in staying on with your firm.

Associates will be more likely to join your firm if they know there’s a chance for career growth and development ahead. Further, having a path to partnership can be even more of an incentive. If there’s no possibility of an eventual partnership and associates only see lateral moves happening, they will leave to seek advancement elsewhere.

Fortunately, even when the traditional partnership track isn’t the primary motivator or a readily available option for every associate, your firm can still encourage employee development and foster long-term engagement — namely, through robust mentorship programs.

Mentoring is about intentionally building meaningful connections that will support the associate’s career journey. Mentors provide career guidance, offer skill development, facilitate networking opportunities in the field, and champion their mentee’s growth, all of which can help foster employee loyalty and reduce attrition at your firm.

    A positive, inclusive work culture

    Team of employees collaborating

Attorney life can be all-consuming and sometimes feel a bit transactional. On top of that is the omnipresent threat of burnout, which can impact a lawyer’s personal life by affecting their mental health and their relationships with friends and family.

Help counteract those challenges by establishing a workplace culture that is positive and demonstrates appreciation. A positive, inclusive culture is one that’s absent gender discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, religious discrimination, and other biases in the workplace — and of course, sexual harassment and abuse should never be tolerated. Instead, look to create a diverse and empathetic team that can support and collaborate easily with one another.

To be able to effectively lead as the legal landscape continues to evolve, Paula Davis, CEO of The Stress & Resilience Institute, suggests that leaders need a blueprint that will give them the tools to:

    • Address the root causes of both stress and high-performance
    • Build thriving teams that stay engaged, connected, and inspired
    • Help their teams adapt to and navigate change, complexity, and uncertainty

You can also decrease law firm turnover by investing a bit more in your upfront hiring process. Create a talent strategy that aligns with your business goals and keep your eyes open for red flags that may signal an applicant is only looking for short-term employment with your firm.

Unfortunately, there may be one glaring issue: Most law firms lack a clear and articulated talent strategy. So how do you find a talent strategy? In this case, let’s reverse engineer it a bit by looking at past exits and what you can learn from them.

Turn past mistakes into learning opportunities

When addressing law firm turnover it’s wise to take a step back and think of the total attorney exits from your firm as a measure of the change happening not only to your roster, but also to your culture. 46% of firms are focused on networking for acquiring new staff. What else can you do to build and retain your roster?

If you are ready to craft a retention strategy, don’t gloss over your past experiences with employees who exited prematurely. Try to identify trends by practice area, client team, supervising partners, office location, or experience level. This may help you determine a root cause or causes behind your firm’s specific culture or workplace areas of opportunity.

And then with that information create a new employee onboarding plan with ongoing strategies that can offer associates benefits that go beyond the status quo. With so many law firms to choose from, think of how yours can stand apart in the best ways possible. If maintaining your workforce is a priority of the firm, your associates should feel that — and in turn be more committed long-term.

Early Retirement planning: Steps to Retire Early

Picture a life without alarm clocks, office meetings, or weekday traffic — where you travel, pursue passions, or simply enjoy peace. That’s the dream early retirement planning aims to turn into reality.

More and more people in India are rethinking the traditional retirement age and exploring how to retire by 40 or 50. While it sounds ambitious, it’s possible with the right approach to retirement planning. It’s not just about saving aggressively — it’s about investing wisely, minimizing debt, and planning strategically for long-term financial freedom.

Successful early retirement planning requires discipline, clarity, and expert guidance. That’s where professional retirement planning services come in — helping you map a plan that aligns with your goals.

In this blog, we’ll explore how to retire early in India, key financial steps, and how expert advice can make it happen.

    What Is Early Retirement Planning?

Early retirement planning is the process of preparing financially and mentally to retire before the conventional retirement age. This doesn’t just mean saving more — it means saving smarter, investing wisely, and making decisions that align with long-term goals.

Unlike traditional retirement planning, early retirement compresses the timeline, often requiring you to accumulate a corpus in 20-30 years rather than 40-45. It also requires that corpus to last longer, potentially 30-40 years or more.

Why Do People Choose Early Retirement?

People pursue early retirement for various reasons, such as:

    • Pursuing passions or hobbies that require time and energy
    • Escaping corporate burnout or a high-stress lifestyle
    • Spending more time with family
    • Starting a second career or a business venture
    • Improving quality of life while still in good health

Whatever the motivation, the path to early retirement starts with meticulous early retirement planning.

Step-by-Step Guide to Early Retirement Planning

    1. Define Your Retirement Goals

The first step in early retirement planning is defining what retirement looks like for you. Consider:

    • At what age do you want to retire?
    • Where do you want to live post-retirement?
    • What kind of lifestyle do you want to maintain?
    • Do you plan to travel, start a business, or pursue a hobby?

Knowing these answers helps you estimate the cost of your dream retirement and set a realistic savings target.

    2. Calculate Your Retirement Corpus

A general rule of thumb is that your retirement corpus should be 25-30 times your annual expenses. If you expect to spend ₹10 lakhs annually, you should aim for a corpus of ₹2.5–3 crores (or more considering inflation).

Use tools like a retirement planner or a retirement calculator to factor in:

    • Life expectancy
    • Inflation
    • Healthcare costs
    • Lifestyle expenses
    • Emergency fund

    3. Start Saving Early and Aggressively

Create multiple savings goals such as:

The earlier you start saving, the more you benefit from compounding. For early retirement, aim to save 40% to 70% of your income, especially in your 20s and 30s. The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement recommends living frugally to save a larger portion of income.

    • Emergency fund (6–12 months of expenses)
    • Retirement fund
    • Health fund
    • Travel or leisure fund

Consistent, high-percentage saving is the foundation of effective early retirement planning.

    4. Invest Smartly

Savings alone won’t take you far unless they’re invested wisely. Choose investments that offer long-term growth and align with your risk appetite.

Ideal Investment Options for Early Retirement:

    • Equity Mutual Funds: High returns over the long term
    • ULIPs: Insurance with investment benefits
    • Public Provident Fund (PPF): Safe and tax-saving
    • National Pension System (NPS): Long-term retirement savings with equity exposure
    • Stocks: For aggressive investors
    • REITs and rental income: Real estate income
    • Gold ETFs: As an inflation hedge

You need to choose and balance these instruments based on your retirement timeline.

    5. Create Passive Income Streams

To retire early, it’s wise to create sources of passive income. These generate revenue even after you stop working full-time.

    Some passive income ideas:

    • Rental income from property
    • Dividends from stocks
    • Royalties (books, music, etc.)
    • Income from side businesses

The goal is to have income that covers your essential expenses without dipping into your retirement corpus prematurely.

    6. Plan for Healthcare Costs

Healthcare expenses can derail the best retirement plans. With aging comes a higher probability of lifestyle and chronic diseases. Once you retire, employer-sponsored health insurance typically ends.

    To protect your finances:

    • Purchase a comprehensive health insurance plan
    • Invest in critical illness cover
    • Build a healthcare emergency fund

Fincart’s retirement plan services help integrate medical cost planning into your overall retirement strategy.

    7. Be Debt-Free Before You Retire

Paying EMIs during retirement can drain your savings. Make it a goal to be debt-free before retiring.

    Tips:

    • Avoid long-term loans after 40
    • Prioritize clearing home loans, credit card debts, and personal loans
    • Don’t co-sign loans that might risk your financial independence

A debt-free retirement ensures you enjoy peace of mind and financial freedom.

    8. Monitor and Rebalance Your Portfolio

Early retirement planning doesn’t stop at investing — it continues with regular monitoring.

    At least once a year:

    • Review your financial goals
    • Rebalance your portfolio
    • Adjust for inflation and market volatility
    • Assess if you’re on track for your target retirement age

A retirement planner can periodically evaluate your plan and suggest course corrections.

    9. Practice Frugality

Retiring early means your savings have to last longer. Adopting a frugal lifestyle — without compromising on essential needs — is critical.

    • Differentiate between needs and wants
    • Reduce discretionary spending
    • Avoid lifestyle inflation
    • Focus on value-driven purchases

Living well below your means during your working years paves the way for financial freedom.

    10. Use the 4% Withdrawal Rule

Once you retire, managing your corpus becomes crucial. The 4% rule suggests that you can withdraw 4% of your total corpus annually in the first year, adjusting for inflation every year after.

For example, if your retirement corpus is ₹3 crores, you can safely withdraw ₹12 lakhs in the first year.

Note: This rule is a general guideline and should be personalized with help from a retirement planner.

    Advantages of Early Retirement

    • More Time for Hobbies and Travel: Enjoy activities while you are still young and energetic.
    • Reduced Stress: No work pressure or deadlines.
    • Opportunity to Start Something New: Launch a business, mentor others, or volunteer.
    • Improved Health: Less work stress can positively impact physical and mental health.

    Challenges of Early Retirement

    • Savings Need to Last Longer: You might need 30–40 years of sustained income.
    • Healthcare Expenses: You bear the full cost without employer benefits.
    • Potential Boredom: Lack of purpose can affect mental health.
    • Social Isolation: Colleagues and peers may still be working.

These challenges can be addressed through thoughtful early retirement planning and lifestyle design.

Making Early Retirement a Reality: Key Takeaways and Action Plan

Early retirement may seem like a luxury, but with smart financial decisions and consistent planning, it can become an achievable goal. The secret lies not in how much you earn, but how wisely you save, invest, and plan. Here’s a consolidated view of what you need to focus on to make early retirement a reality — not just a dream.

    1. Start Early, Stay Disciplined

The earlier you begin your early retirement planning, the more time your money has to grow. Even small monthly investments can compound into a significant corpus over time. Delaying just a few years can drastically impact your retirement corpus.

    2. Key Elements of an Effective Early Retirement Plan:

    • Aggressive savings strategy: Aim to save at least 40–60% of your income if you’re targeting retirement before 50.
    • Diversified investment portfolio: Combine high-growth instruments (mutual funds, stocks) with safe options (PPF, NPS, FDs).
    • Health insurance coverage: Post-retirement medical costs can drain your savings. Invest in a comprehensive health plan early.
    • Debt-free living: Clear off major debts — home loans, personal loans, credit card balances — before retirement.

    3. Build Multiple Income Streams

Relying solely on your retirement corpus can be risky. To ensure sustained cash flow, create parallel income sources such as:

    • Rental income
    • Dividend-paying stocks or mutual funds
    • Freelance consulting or part-time business ventures

    4. Monitor, Review, and Adjust

Your retirement plan isn’t a one-time effort. Revisit it annually to:

    • Adjust your investment contributions
    • Rebalance asset allocations based on market trends
    • Recalculate expenses as per lifestyle or health needs
    • Keep pace with inflation and changing goals

    5. Leverage Expert Retirement Planning Services

Planning for early retirement involves more than just saving money — you must also account for inflation, tax implications, insurance needs, and changing market conditions. This can get complex quickly. Working with a professional retirement planner gives you access to tailored strategies, informed decision-making, and regular plan reviews to ensure your goals stay within reach. Expert retirement planning services help you stay disciplined, optimize investments, and make smarter financial choices as your needs evolve.

How Many Days Per Week Should You Be Lifting?

    April 9, 2024 –

As a Personal Trainer for over 12 years, one of the questions I often get is “how many days per week should I be working out?”

How Many Days Per Week Should You Be Lifting?

    (outfit details by adidas)

The answer can vary based on an individuals schedule, time, injuries, etc. but there is a common structure that I believe in.

What I would looove to see my clients doing is picking up the weights 2-3 days per week! (1 is always better than none as well and I’ve had many clients make amazing progress on 1 day per week).

I recently just completed my Women’s Fitness Specialist Course and every single period of our lives as women the number one recommendation is RESISTANCE TRAINING.

    (pictured: adidas women sports bra)

Why? Resistance training has so many benefits such as getting STRONG, improved muscle strength & size, help protect you from injury, weight management, improves heart health, can help manage blood sugar levels, & helps you remain independent as you age. (Just to name a few!).

All of these reasons & more are why we focus on progressing our strength exercises in all of our classes & group training classes at the studio.

What is Resistance Training? Basically any means of using your muscles to apply force against gravity in some structured manner as in lifting weights. You’re applying “resistance” to the muscle that in turn, provides you with so many benefits as listed above.

Getting everyone (especially women) to pick up the weights is a huge passion of mine, and if they smile while doing it, even better!

So, what does the “perfect week” look like? Here are my thoughts!

2-3 days of resistance training (minimum, and 1 is better than none!) + 1-2 days of getting your heart rate up (where you’re out of breath) + 2 days minimum of rest/recovery/mobility/low impact + DAILY movement/steps is going to be KEY for an overall wellness.

It’s truly not about being perfect, it’s about CONSISTENCY OVER TIME, and that will always always win the race!

Also having a cute adidas outfit to hit the gym in can totally help with motivation!

Was this helpful? I’d love to dive into more topics so let me know in the comment section!

    Be true to you,
